The gift of feeling naked...

Have you heard there are two types of fun? Type one and type two.

Type one fun is actually fun at the time. Surfing. Sipping a cocktail on a beach. Playing the kazoo while no one is around to scold you. It’s fun without any of the downsides. Type two fun is very different – we’ll tell you more later.

Giving gifts fits right into the type one fun category. And December is coming quick around the corner.

It’s very rare for a gift of clothing to remove the feeling of being clothed. But apparently that’s exactly what our boxers are doing.

If you’d like to give someone the thrill of going naked without the criminal record (a kind of type one fun we hadn’t considered)… or if your friends just love beautiful clothes made ethically, and you love affordable gifts, this could be your moment.

As for type two fun – it’ll mess with you…

A couple of us have been talking about the three peaks challenge. Taking on the three highest mountains in the UK in 24 hours.

Climbing even one of these peaks, on the wrong day, can be grim. 

If you’re not from the UK, we should acknowledge that these mountains might be more like hills in your eyes.

But we know just how dangerous they can be. Just how despicable. Or at least one of us does. 

And if you don't commit the grimness to memory, the mountains will trick you into going back.

It was July. It should have been a beautiful day.

And it began beautiful. We set off at 6am after camping in the woods – early summer light was flitting through the canopy, and a carpet of bright green moss softened each step. 

Then the rain began at 7am.

It wasn’t much to begin with. It made that pitter-patter sound gentle rain makes on leaves. 

But then we reached the base of the mountain. And the rain got a little heavier.

We began climbing. And soon the route was shrouded by more than fog. The path went straight into the cloud that was raining. 

Don’t know if you've ever been inside a cloud that's raining? But it’s almost like walking through a swimming pool – your clothes don’t stand a chance. No matter how waterproof they are – they’re sodden, your skin is sodden, your boots are sodden. The whole day is sodden.

You’re one with the cloud now.

I’d say we got wetter and wetter, but we didn’t because there is an absorption limit to the human body.

But as we climbed higher, we did get colder and colder. At the summit, one of the group nearly caught hypothermia. 

You’d imagine the descent would be easier. But at the bottom of the mountain, a river had burst its banks and the crossing point had turned to rapids.

So we backtracked, took the long way around, and at 8pm, fourteen hours after we began walking and thirteen hours after it began raining, we arrived at our campsite.

So we set up our wet tents. Climbed into our wet sleeping bags, and once we drifted off… our dreams were filled with precipitation. 

But then our brains began tricking us

We're type one fun people. You know – the kind of fun that's actually fun at the time?

Type two fun is the kind of fun that's fun in hindsight. The same way that running for your life from an escaped lion can be fun in hindsight.

Well, the day after the deluge, the sun shone. Clothes dried out. We could almost, almost laugh at what happened the day before. Some of the group might even remember the time fondly.

That's type two fun doing its work. Rewiring your brain. Tricking you into thinking you might want to do the same again sometime.

But let us tell you now: You don't. Don’t let the type two fun mess with your head. 

You actually want type one fun in your life. 

Type one fun isn't selfish. It just feels good at the time and doesn’t give you hypothermia.
